CPI Alianza
Hivern Discs
Five years on from their eye catching El Túnel/ Proceso EP, Marc Piñol and Hugo Capablanca unleash their distinctive and atmospheric debut album as C.P.I. Out on well-loved Barcelona imprint, Hivern Discs, Alianza is a beautiful trip into the murky and hallucinatory world of this magnificent duo. There are no formal structures holding the album together, only nebulous, ever-shifting cloud gases of unusual and eerie atmospheres that drift along, almost entirely devoid of drums or conventional rhythms. Distorted synths, warped bass, glitchy melodies and industrial sounds interplay with radio fuzz, crackling fires and whirring machines to create an inimitable soundscape that is as singular as it is captivating. The manipulated textures and strange FX add an uneasy feeling, mixing with anxiety, paranoia and confusion as we get further and further untethered from the sense of reality that felt so comforting before the record starting playing. There are moments of peace and fun on the album, but these are overridden by an intense sense of danger that remains ever-present in the murky undergrowth of this wild and fertile debut.
