Editing pitch bend and controllers in the Key Editor

-

1

The Key Editor in Cubase has always been flexible when it comes to viewing and editing MIDI notes and controllers. The easiest way to edit existing data is by clicking on the ‘+’ icon below the Piano Keys, and selecting ‘Show Used Controllers’.

2

Further functions are found by clicking on the triangle (‘Controller Lane Setup)’ to the right of the ‘+”. ’Set up Available Controllers’ lets you select a common set of controllers for quicker access – eg CC1 (Mod Wheel) and CC64 (Sustain).

3

Creating your Controller Lane Presets is a useful way to switch between different tasks. Here are some simple presets configured to show Note Velocity alongside another Controller. Individual Controller Lane heights are also stored with Presets.

4

The Right-Click context menu lets you quickly Create or Remove a Controller Lane, but now also facilitates Copy and Pasting within, and between, Lanes. Here Mod Wheel changes have been copied to the Expression (CC11) Controller Lane.

5

MIDI CC events will record as steps but you can create smooth transitions by switching to ‘Ramp’ mode (in the Info Line or Controller Lane Setup menu). Curves are also created by moving the handle at the mid-point of any ramp line.

6

Adding or editing Pitchbend data has always been fiddly, but it is now possible to configure its display range to match that of an instrument (eg +/- 2 semitones), and then show accurate semitone steps on a grid in the controller lane.
