>Physical-modeling instrument­s recreate the real-world conditions behind how an instrument makes sound. By ‘modeling’ principles of ‘physics’, physical modeling stays away from capturing samples, instead emulating an instrument down to its deepest principles: the movement of a string in the air; the impact of a finger, a plectrum, a mallet.

Applied Acoustics Systems are masters at this, and the new version of their Chromaphon­e instrument expands on the possibilit­ies of the technique. V3 is something of an ‘object’ simulator, but its real focus is in modeling blocks, membranes and tubes. Mallet instrument­s, drums and perc sounds are the order of the day…
