Matthew E. White & Lonnie Holley Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection
Spacebomb Records
Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection is the joining together of two pioneers of the American south’s modern music scene. Virginia singersongwriter, producer, composer, guitarist and Spacebomb Records founder, Matthew E. White and Alabama experimentalist Lonnie Holley first connected when White and his band backed Holley up at a gig in Richmond in 2019. White then had the idea that Holley would be the perfect collaborator for a clutch of loose, freeform sketches that he recorded for his last album, but ended up not being the right match for that project. Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection was thus born, a brilliantly experimental and frenetic coming together of like minds. White’s dizzying keys, whirring synths, wonky rhythms, unpredictable grooves, jagged guitar lines and deep basslines create a soundscape that celebrates freedom and creativity. Holley’s surrealist vocals are drenched in spirituality and social commentary. A compelling collaboration, this record is an explosive concoction of visceral grooves, gut churning rhythms and avant-garde thought.
