Choosing a layout

The first things you need to consider are the sizes of gear you know you’ll need to house. The main desk needs to be deep enough to accommodate keyboards or controllers, the drawer likewise a MIDI controller etc.

Consider any rackmounts you want. Total width is 19”, although the centre-to-centre distance between mounting holes (horizontally) is 18.31”. A single unit of height (1U) is 1.75” but leave breathing room top and bottom.

If you’re seeking a standard height, buy off-the-peg legs like we did. We still modelled them in 3D, to check our design worked. Most manufacturers supply dimensions. A simple sketch works but 3D allows us to visualise accurately.

Our cable tray, has a simple J profile, made out of offcuts from our plywood. We think this works well, as it not only keeps any cabling nice and neat but also out of sight. On top of that it makes it easy to screw multi gang power strips in place.
