Instruments and MIDI effects in Studio One

-

Let’s see how Studio One lets us create multi instrument racks in order to apply MIDI effects

01 >

Studio One has a great way of combining multiple instruments into a rack system. By dragging a new instrument onto an existing one’s channel and choosing to Combine rather than Replace, you’ll end up with a flexible ‘multi-instrument’ setup.

02 >

Here you can add multiple instruments so that you can play together at the same time. You can also drag elements onto the editor board to get this done. Using the ranges across the keyboard at the bottom, you can have different instruments respond to different notes.

03 >

Here in a Multi Instrument setup, you can also load some of Studio One’s Note FX processors. You can also add in third-party MIDI effects here, but note that you’ll have to take care of the routing within the plugins’ own interfaces.

04 >

Any of Studio One’s Note FX processors that you’ve added can actually be edited right inside the larger editor. On the left, you can access a panel as we’re doing for the Arpeggiator tool.

05 >

From the routing setup, you’re only a stone’s throw away from the Macros page to help tie your disparate instruments together under one control set. We recommend assigning macros to like parameters across multiple synths – envelope timings and modulation depths are good places to start.

06 >

You can also access volume and panning for the various instruments in your setup here. Command over the entire channel’s output (via the Mixer controls) is also possible to gain from the comfort of a macro control.

07 >

Unfortunately, you can’t add effects plugins into a Multi Instrument rack in Studio One. You can do this separately by creating a new Routing on the insert slot of the Multi Instrument’s channel…

08

…and once you’ve got that separate effects routing set up, you can access the effects’ parameters from the macro controls of the Multi Instrument, tying the whole setup together even more – no matter if they’re not all routed from the same screen.
