Creating Trusting The Mystery’s banging beats

Rebecca uses Live’s built-in effects to get the most out of her beefy kick drums and tom

“Naturally I always start with the kick. Here I’ve layered three kicks together,” says Rebecca. The first kick is a mid-range heavy, punchy kick, hi-passed with EQ Eight to take out its low-end, and cut in the mid-range. “I’ve dipped here where I had a frequency I didn’t really like, and I’ve raised the top to give it that extra punchiness.”

“A trick I like, especially with bassy kicks, is to use the Corpus,” Rebecca reveals. She applies Corpus to the second, fuller kick, sets it to Membrane mode, then tunes its pitch down and dials in the Dry/Wet level to add the desired amount of low end. “I usually leave that on 1%, or 2% max,” she adds.

The third kick layer is just a hi-passed top end that Rebecca runs through Live’s Redux bitcrusher: “A lot of the time I add the bit reduction on top, just to give it that slight texture and that slight ringing sound.”

The bass in the track comes from a tom drum sample. This is hi- and low-passed with EQ Eight, sidechained to the kick, and driven with the Abletunes Drive Knob. Live’s Drum Buss adds a touch more drive, then the kick is run through Live’s Saturator, set to Soft Sine, for a final touch of colour.
