Sepehr Survivalism
Shaytoon
This brooding mini-LP is out on IranianAmerican live act, DJ, producer, remixer and label owner Sepehr’s own imprint, Shaytoon (which focuses on the Iranian/Middle Eastern underground). The record has a diverse, timeless palette over seven spellbinding tracks. Touching on late ’90s drum&bass, break-laden techno, dub aesthetics, acid and a mind-bending, psychedelic spirit, Survivalism is flooded with Middle Eastern influences throughout. Taught with tense energy and a sense of danger, the record skilfully traverses dark soundscapes with plenty of personality and sense of adventure. Wonderfully off-kilter and non-conformist, Survivalism packs its energy through electrifying rhythms and tough drums, but it’s its stretched-out pads, manipulated melodies, woozy electronics and subtle vocal transformations that give the record its unique and distinctive flavours. Sepehr’s position as one of the most intriguing artists on the left of centre electronic scene is enhanced once again through this magnificent album. Long may this individualism continue. Tom Jones
