Controller mode: access hidden functionality

You’ll want to get deeper with this way of using the MPC when you’re ready to do your final mixdown

One of the best things about this version of the MPC lineup is that it can function both in standalone and controller mode. The MPC 2 application and plugin will mirror whatever it is you’re doing on the screen of the MPC, but there are a few advantages of working in Controller Mode.

02 >

First of all, you’re not limited to the built-in effects and instruments on the MPC. All of your AU and VST instruments will also work and can be integrated into your project. However, make sure to note that when you open up this project in Standalone mode, these instruments won’t be available.

03 >

Access Controller mode by tapping the up arrow in the top left corner of the screen, and then tapping the MPC icon that looks like a computer chip. Your MPC will ask you to confirm that you wish to enter Controller mode. Make sure your MPC is connected via USB to your computer. For this walkthrough, we’re going to be using the AU MPC plugin inside of Ableton Live 11.

04 >

In Ableton, drop the AU MPC plugin on a MIDI track. You should now see your MPC return to the normal Program screen. You’ll now have to open your project in Standalone form; but you can use Ableton’s audio routing to route each track from the MPC to its own track in Live, as with Elektron’s Overbridge software.

05 >

To do this, create a few new audio tracks and navigate to the Audio From window. Select the track your MPC plugin is on, followed by the Output pair of your choice. If you’re working in 32 input/output mode, you should see all 32 outputs there to choose from.

06

On your MPC, select the Program tab on the left of the screen to change which Output each track is sent to. You can send drums to their own tracks, bass on its own, etc, and this way, when you hit record, you’re recording a multi-tracked version of your beat as opposed to just a stereo mixdown.
