Nils Frahm Old Friends New Friends

Over the last 15 years or so, German composer, pianist and producer, Nils Frahm’s music has bridged the gap between classical piano and contemporary aesthetics, reaching new and younger fans for piano music across the world. Based in Berlin, with his studio at the renowned Funkhaus, Frahm has garnered a reputation as an innovative composer and live performer. His music, with piano as its backbone, is full of emotion and beauty and his ability to draw on other contemporary styles has resonated with a new audience. Old Friends New Friends is his latest release on LEITER, the label he set up with his manager, Felix Grimm. It’s a collection of 23 solo piano tracks recorded between 2009 and 2021, almost all previously unreleased. The collection offers a snapshot of history, unveiling pieces made on different pianos and at different stages of Frahm’s career and therefore showcasing varying approaches. What is constant is the German’s ability to conjure emotions. Beauty, intimacy and honesty run through this stunning collection of tracks. Tom Jones
