Power
Tri Angle
Two years on from a brace of impressive EPs for Tri Angle Records, the Houston-born and Berlin-based prodders Lotic unleash their brooding debut album. Unfamiliar drum patterns and experimental grooves combine to create an utterly compelling and unpredictable sound palette.
Including vocals for the first time on a Lotic project, Power bristles with a political focus as it discusses the experience of power, specifically from a black viewpoint. The album is in some ways simple and strippedback, but built on complex rhythm structures, otherworldly synth sketches, grumbling bass and eerie melodies. Playing around with the boundaries of electronic music, Lotic explore the space between club-ready techno, drone, classical, industrial and punk with murky pop sensibilities thrown in for good measure. At times cold and mechanical but at others warm, fuzzy and full of human emotion, the record has real depth and breadth.
Power is the highly distinctive sound of artists who work with perpetual curiosity and a highly innovative approach.
