DOs & DON’Ts

-

> Do give a lesser element from the original song the chance to shine in the remix. Promoting a background element to centre-stage is a great way to put your own mark on a track.

> Do work on multiple variations of the original track, giving yourself more than one option for the final result. As you work, one of the projects will likely start to stand out.

> Don’t disrespect the vocal – it’s one of the most individualistic parts of the original track, and usually what gives it its soul. If you start throwing vocoders and distortion on there, the chances are very slim that you’re making things better!

> Don’t transform the original track beyond all recognition. People’s musical sensibilities are finely-tuned, and if a remix abandons most elements of the original, listeners will be able to tell, and you’ll be less likely to be chosen for more exclusive projects in the future.
