Foolish to buy vintage gear?

There are many great options out today, so it isn’t necessary to buy vintage anymore for a great analogue tone. However, that doesn’t mean older synths and outboard don’t sound great – in good shape, they can sound amazing! However, you need to weigh up the initial investment/appreciation/depreciation plus possible/ongoing maintenance. Also, finding reliable synth/vintage techs is a job in itself!
