This month at Galston Early Learning Centre the children have shown great interest in Superheroes! After reading the story “Super Worm” by Julia Donaldson, the children enjoyed discussing how they learnt about the heroic worm that saved many of his insect friends from danger. The children’s interest in the story led to many discussions about what heroes do, who are our heroes and what makes a person a hero. Throughout our discussions, the educators reinforced the positive qualities that our heroes have, how they help people, protect people, are kind, strong and brave. We then discussed how hero’s role model positive helping behaviour and how we can all encourage this behaviour amongst our friends, families and the outer community. The children were able to brainstorm different superheroes and answers questions on how they would use their powers to help others.

We channelled our superhero interest in to our art and craft experiences where over the course of two weeks the children were given the opportunity to get involved with some superhero box construction, paddle pop stick superheroes and superhero masks. These activities allowed the children to express themselves creatively and take ownership and pride in their creations. These were great opportunities for the children to engage in shared play, developing their ability to listen to each other, taking turns, interacting and negotiating with one another.

We are now looking at our local superheroes from our immediate community, we believe that these people are great role models for our children and we hope that they are able to look up to them and follow in their footsteps.
