Galston Equestrian Club - for fun, information and competitions!
Dr Kohnke gave a highly entertaining and informative talk on 21st April on common horse aliments including gastric ulcers, string halt, greasy heal and worming regimes. The 50 attendees benefited from Dr Kohnke's wealth of experience gained from over 40 years as an equine vet. He has presented at over 2,500 seminars and written numerous research papers. He took questions from the floor and gave out many "how to” tips like the correct way to bandage a leg and why, treating with ice and when, and why you should monitor feeds high in iodine. The presentation only ended because it was getting late, not because Dr Kohnke had run out of topics to talk on! Thank you very much, Dr Kohnke, for sharing your knowledge, and Joy Chew for organising it.
The Open Dressage Competition on 24th April was our biggest to date with 131 entries keeping our five judges very busy. Thanks to Jan Geary, Julie Jones, Sue Birch, Jean Still and Camilla Mowbray for their expert judging. It was a busy and very well run day – thank you to Liz Jones (President and Dressage Phase Head) and the committee.
What fun we had at our Equitation Fun Day on Saturday 7th May! Riders from all disciplines played with the club’s new array of toys, developing trust with their horses on the ground and encouraging confidence with different obstacles. After play time, there was a little tournament with a time limit to complete 5 exercises with the equipment. Some horses were seen kicking a ball around - I don’t know who enjoyed themselves more – the horses or riders! After lunch, the exercises continued, but this time with the horses being ridden. Thanks to Barbara Anderson and Sue Southey for organising such an entertaining day!
Rebecca Ashton (qualified Pilates Instructor and Level 1 Dressage Instructor) was fully booked for lessons in the afternoon, and then on Wednesday evening 11th May, gave a highly informative class at the Dural Squash Courts on how to move parts of your body independently to maintain a balanced seat.
Things to look forward to: Sunday 12th June will be an exciting Training Day at our beautiful grounds at the Rural Sports Facility. Thank you, Hornsby Council, for keeping them in pristine condition. They are the envy of other clubs! No wonder we are getting more riders coming to use our grounds during the week and on Saturdays!
On Thursday 16th June, Dr Shannon Lee, equine veterinary dentist, who has worked and taught around the world, will be giving a talk at the Galston Club Auditorium at 7.00pm, concentrating on bits and biting, head carriage issues and vices, among other things. This is free to members and non-members, and meals and drinks can be purchased and taken into the auditorium. The flyer is on our website for more information.
Entries are now open on Nominate for our Members Only Dressage Competition on 26th June.
