Anglicare Annual Food Drive – Dural District Anglican Churches
Sunday 19th June 2016 - Annual Food Drive
Donald Horne, somewhat ironically, coined the term ‘the lucky country’ in his book of the same name. It is a description that many Australians have taken to heart: Australians like to believe they live in “the lucky country”.
There is no doubt that on a world scale Australia is a prosperous country. Most Australians have access to more food than they could ever need – too much, in some cases – and with recent revelations that Australian households are responsible for $8 billion worth of food wasted per year, it seems that many of us have more food than we know what to do with.
However this is not true for all who live in this lucky country. According to the Australian Council of Social Service, 1 in 8 people live in poverty. High incomes bring with them a high cost of living which can be crushing for those struggling to live on government benefits and low wages. When rent and utilities are paid for, food is often the essential that suffers.
For many years now our district has been giving food and essentials to families who find themselves, especially in winter, in difficult circumstances. Anglicare have come to rely on the over 30,000 items you generously donate each year.
We thank you in anticipation for the baked beans, tuna, toilet paper rolls, cereal, long life milk (for a full list go to our website) that are given each year. Hope to see you at your front door, the supermarket or at schools. Rev. Adam Lamb Senior Minister Dural District Anglican Churches
