Rural Round Up

- By Councilor Warren Waddell

It was especially pleasing to see ANZAC Day commemorations resume relatively normal arrangements last month. The presence of so many from within the rural area at different locations demonstrates our strong sense of community and is testament to our ongoing recognition of our fallen service men and women. Especially at Glenorie’s Wal Buckingham Park which has experienced some challenges over past years in terms of hosting the Dawn Service.

On that note, I was pleased to be informed that fund raising for the Ray Whiteman Heritage Fence has been so successful to date that the stone has now been ordered and work likely to commence shortly. In addition, State grant applications have opened that may assist with further restoration of our key memorial sites.

With our new Play Plan endorsed at the last Council meeting it will be encouraging to also see the staged renewal of our entire park and playground assets noted within the report.

Residents may also have noticed the roll out of our new gateway signage throughout the Shire. The previous signage had served us well for several decades but the replacement version was thought to better demonstrate our shire’s unique blend of urban and bushland features.

Looking ahead

Council also resolved to endorse the Economic and Tourism Strategy and the Employment Lands study. For this reason I would welcome community input into how we best deliver economic sustainability and employment opportunities to the rural area.
