bee immunisation

Gardening Australia - - GARDEN NEWS -

Viruses spread by varroa mites are the world’s leading cause of honey bee deaths, but they may have met their match, thanks to research conducted by molecular geneticist Dr Emily Remnant from The University of Sydney. Dr Remnant and her team have been injecting the bacteria Wolbachia into queen bees to increase resistance to the viruses throughout the colony, with promising results. Last year, Dr Remnant received the Agriculture Minister’s Science and Innovation Award for her work, which has enabled her to continue with this important research.
