If you don’t know the pH of your soil, it’s worth finding out as it can affect the types of plants that you are able to grow. Take about half a dozen soil samples from different parts of the garden, as soil pH can vary from place to place. Keep the samples labelled to identify which section they come from. Most garden centres will do a pH test for you, but check with them first. Alternatively, invest in your own basic pH test kit and do the test yourself, following the simple instructions on the packet.
