RED-BACK SPIDER
Identifying marks
Black with distinctive red or orange stripe down its round abdomen. Females also have red marking on underside of their abdomen. Long, skinny legs. 10mm long.
Emergency measures
Do not bandage wound. Wash with soap and warm water, pat dry and use antiseptic cream or powder. Apply a cold pack. Use pain-relief medication if needed. Take antihistamine if swelling or itching persists. Call 000 if victim is a child, is pregnant, is in extreme pain or collapses. Lingering effects
Intense local pain, sometimes with nausea, vomiting, sweating and muscle weakness. Pain and itching for up to a week. Action needed?
Female red-back spiders usually remain in their web. Look out for them in sheds, plant pots, toys and other items lying around. Also under wheelbarrows and furniture. Remove and dispose of the cream to yellow egg sacs. Have nests removed by a pest control expert or use registered pesticide, following instructions.
