Identifyin­g marks Black thorax with fine brown hairs. Amber abdomen with black stripes, thickening towards tail, where the stinger is located. 13–16mm long. Emergency measures

Scrape or pull stinger out as quickly as possible to reduce venom entering wound. The speed, not the method, is most important. Try not to squeeze stinger. Wash with soap and warm water, pat dry. Use antiseptic cream or powder. Apply cold pack. Use pain-relief medication if needed. Take antihistam­ine if swelling or itching persists. Call 000 if severe allergic reaction occurs. Lingering effects

Sharp burning pain, swelling and redness that dissipates in a few hours. Allergic reactions include hives, nausea, breathing difficulty, fast but weak pulse. Action needed?

Be aware of bees that are present. Avoid walking on flowering weeds barefoot.
