MULCH for summer

Mulching appears on job lists again and again. Why? Because most mulches are made from organic material that breaks down over time, causing the mulch to get thinner and thinner. This means it can no longer do the critically important summer job of keeping soil moist and cool. Hence, spring is the time to top up mulch layers before the arrival of very hot or wet weather. Before mulching, always water well and do any required fertilising.
