Chaplaincy dinner a sweet treat
A RUGBY league legend will descend on Laidley to help ensure a vital school service continues.
Former State of Origin and Australian rugby league player Petero Civoniceva will be the keynote speaker at the school chaplaincy dessert and coffee fundraiser on October 27.
The fundraiser will be held at the Laidley Cultural Centre and will raise money for school chaplaincy in the Laidley cluster.
Laidley District State School chaplain Phil Bryce said the evening was important to continue school chaplaincy in the area.
“It is our major fundraiser for the year we put everything into the basket for this event,” Mr Bryce said.
He said the Federal Government only partially funded the chaplaincy program with fundraising needed.
“The Government puts in a set amount, and that amount hasn’t changed since 2007,” he said.
“Other costs have increased but the funding hasn’t increased over that time.
“We’ve got to make up the balance from community support and community awareness and fundraising and that’s what this evening is all about.”
Mr Bryce said school chaplaincy played an important role in the development of students.
“Chaplaincy has been here in our cluster for eight years with Federal funding but even before that it was here and supported by the local churches,” he said.
“It’s well respected, well received and it should be well supported by our community because it does work.
“If people look at the statistics, it’s amazing the difference chaplaincy can make.”
Mr Bryce said aside from one-on-one support, he ran a number of programs including shed men, radiance girls, and breakfast club for the students’ benefit.
“You are asked to do so many different things during any particular school term,” he said.
While the school chaplaincy dessert and coffee fundraiser is free entry, donations are encouraged.
