Valuable shopping campaign
Supporting one shop only aids other shops in region
SOMERSET Regional Council is supporting buy local initiatives for the fourth consecutive year.
Council is pleased to again be a foundation sponsor of the important promotion that supports small businesses and encourages residents to shop locally and support our communities.
The Town Proud initiative is about actively supporting small business operators and encouraging residents to shop locally and support grassroots businesses.
Mayor Graeme Lehmann said council was proud to again be involved and help spread the “buy local” mantra.
“This is a valuable and important campaign that is worth supporting each year,” Cr Lehmann said.
“We actively encourage residents to support their local community where possible too by buying local and keeping their money where it really matters, in the heart of rural communities.
“When people purchase from locally owned businesses more money is kept in the community and in most cases, these locally owned businesses are making purchases from other local businesses too, as well as engaging with local service providers and tradesmen.
“Therefore, when you’re spending your money at local businesses, you’re supporting other local businesses and helping with stimulating the local economy. It’s a win-win.”

implementation of various business registers and awarding of tenders and contracts.
The Live Love Buy Local mantra has really hit home across Somerset in recent years and it cements a simple key message.
“Buy local and being town proud go hand in hand. By buying local and supporting grassroots initiatives we can all make a difference,” Cr Lehmann said.
“It’s a simple reality that by buying food that was grown and harvested close to where you live, you will keep the money within our community and help your town to grow.
“We are also helping our communities thrive and we’re helping create job opportunities locally.
“We’re all becoming increasingly time poor so by shopping locally, we’re saving time which can better be spent with our families and friends.
“We can all make Somerset a vibrant, prosperous and sustainable community by supporting our local businesses.
“This in turn will also encourage growth and long-term prosperity of our smaller townships.’’
