Celebrating their best
Pillar of Helidon region named Citizen of the Year
TO SOME in the Helidon community, Noleene Hill might be just the friendly face of the Criterion Hotel but she’s also a quiet achiever who’s always there for Helidon – and this was recognised last week.
Ms Hill was named 2018 Helidon Citizen of the Year at the Helidon and Districts Progress Association’s awards night last Tuesday.
HDPA secretary Bree Sommers said the award was an important way to thank members of the community for their efforts.
“It’s to honour and recognise someone that’s done outstanding work or made contributions to the community and the district,” Miss Sommers said.
The award recognised the best of the community and Ms Hill certainly fit the bill.
“She’s always been there as a support for the community when they need to have a chat or to vent, she’s also donated financially to a lot of the town fairs and fetes and festivals and she’s an all-round lovely lady,” Miss Sommers said.
Ms Hill has been a pillar of the Helidon community for nearly 30 years, first arriving to set up the Criterion Hotel after her previous lease in Glamorgan Vale ran out, and said she wouldn’t dream of leaving.
“I’m quite happy here – people are great and it’s a good little area to live,” Ms Hill said. “This is my life and I love it.”
Ms Hill was surprised by the award but was grateful for the recognition.
“It was great – I always used to have a great interest in who got it but I never thought it would be me,” she said.
“I just go about and do my little bit, I’m happy to do what I do for people.”
Miss Sommers said about 30 people came to the awards night, including friends and family, to show their support and thanks.
“Her family was there and they were so happy that she had finally been recognised within the community and Noleene was stoked as well ... she just had smiles on her face,” she said.
Miss Sommers said while some might not notice the tireless efforts of people like Ms Hill, Helidon wouldn’t be the place it was without them.
I just go about and do my little bit, I’m happy to do what I do for people.
