Laidley pair ready to kick for gold again
TAEKWONDO: Laidley Bai Rui Taekwon-do instructor Darren Finch and his student Catherine Ovendine are heading to the CHITF World Championships this weekend – and they’ve set their goals high for the tournament.
“I’m hoping to either place or take it out,” Finch said.
Ovendine also had her eyes on the top prize, hoping to improve on the bronze medal she won previously.
“I am aiming for gold, but I’m happy if I place and if I don’t then I learn something out of it,” Ovendine said.
The lead up to the championships has been hard work for the pair, but Finch said the extra effort in training would pay off when they went head-to-head with the world best fighters at the tournament.
“Both of us have been training hard so we’re feeling really good,” he said.
The duo were approaching their training leading up to this weekend as if it were any other session and simply pushing themselves a little bit further every time.
But they also have an ace up their sleeve.
Finch travelled to New Zealand in January to learn from the world’s number one competitor Carl Van Roon. He said the opportunity to be coached by the 11-time world champion over three intense days was an incredible experience.
“It was awesome – that’s the only way I can put it,” he said. “To have one-on-one time with that kind of experience is something you just can’t beat.”
He had incorporated many of the skills he learnt from the experience into his training regiment and hoped they would pay dividends for the pair at the up coming event.
