SBS ONE, 12.55am, M ( 2006)
Corneliu Poromboiu’s first-rate debut ( which earned him the best first feature accolade in Cannes in 2006) sends up small-town Romanian politics 16 years after the revolution that ousted the iron-fisted leader Nicolae Ceausescu. When the small town of Vaslui’s role in the revolution comes into question on a provincial chat show the characters – an alcoholic teacher ( Ion Sapdaru) and a pensioner who dresses up as Santa ( Mircea Andreescu) – clamber to cement their heroism and place in history. The deadpan delivery of these deflated, monochrome anti-heroes injects a dose of wry humour into this intelligent satire.
