On the rarest of occasions, you come across a miraculous film made by people you’ve never heard of and starring unfamiliar faces that completely floors you. Beasts of the Southern Wild is one such film. It is an apocalyptic fable that comments not only on humankind’s destruction of our natural environment, but on the remarkable ability of people to adapt, fight and survive. Hushpuppy ( Oscar- nominated Quvenzhané Wallis) is a fearless and unbreakable young girl who lives a most unconventional life with her father Wink ( Dwight Henry). When the ice caps melt, a fierce storm floods their low- lying home dubbed “The Bathtub” and her father is struck down ill, Hushpuppy ventures off to help. There are so many layers to this film, it just begs a second viewing. Finding her way: Quvenzhané Wallis.
