THE IMITATION GAME
GEM, Saturday, 7.30pm, M (2014)
This biopic is an intense and haunting portrayal of an intelligent, complicated man. Cryptanalyst Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch, pictured) is arrested for the criminal offence of homosexuality, but little did the authorities know they were incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany’s World War II Enigma machine, helping to shorten the war and save thousands of lives.
