Gunfire kills 1, wounds another

-

ONE man is dead and another was fighting for his life in hospital last night after western Sydney’s latest shooting.

The pair, both in their early 20s, were shot seven or eight times as they sat in a car near the western end of Greenacre Rd, Greenacre, about 1.20pm yesterday.

One of the men, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, died at the scene, having been hit multiple times in the chest and shoulder.

The other, who was at the wheel, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

He had been shot in the chest.

One witness said the men were in a grey Holden Commodore and the gunman was travelling in another car.

‘‘The passenger died straight away. I think they (the bullets) were meant for the passenger,’’ Greenacre resident George Mourade, 44, said.

‘‘He was trying to open the door and run away, but he died face down.

‘‘The driver was battling to survive . . . I don’t know if he’ll make it.’’

Mr Mourade, who described Greenacre as a ‘‘beautiful area’’, said he was among the first on the scene after hearing seven or eight shots fired.

He said he didn’t see the gunman, but added: ‘‘Somebody drove away.’’

Mr Mourade said he wasn’t sure who the victims were, but suggested that they might have lived locally.

The dead man’s body, covered in a white sheet, remained at the scene, a grass reserve outside a house in Greenacre Rd, not far from Greenacre Park Reserve.

Police were at the scene gathering evidence.

There have been dozens of shootings in western Sydney since January, many of which are said to involve gangs fighting over drugs and territory.
