Spinner makes mockery of rain

Barrabool 2-11 v Newcomb 154

- JUSTIN FLYNN

BARRABOOL spinner Nathan Findlay made a mockery of the wet conditions and bowled his side into a winning position against Newcomb on day one of round two in Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association on Saturday.

The 20- year- old off- spinner took 5-59 and helped Barrabool dismiss Newcomb for 154.

Skipper Kane Pickering said Findlay was the pick of the bowlers.

‘‘He bowled 23 overs for us and bowled really well for a spinner in the wet conditions,’’ he said.

Newcomb captain Nathan Bisset won the toss and batted first, but Barrabool controlled the first 20 overs of the game and when Bisset was dismissed, the score was 4-47 and the home side was well on top.

Paul Cammaroto ( 31) and Adam McKim (41) then combined for a 70-run partnership and that was when Pickering said things got tough. ‘‘ We bowled really well all day, but the middle part was hard with the wet ball,’’ the 22-year-old skipper said.

‘‘A score of 160 was about what we would have taken though before the game, with the lack of movement so it was a good effort.’’

Apart from Findlay, James Fisher was consistent with 3-35 from 15.1 overs. Barrabool had to negotiate a tough 11 overs before stumps and slumped to 2-11 with Brendan Sheedy taking two early wickets.

But Pickering refused to concede that any gloss had been taken off his side’s overall performance with both of his openers back in the sheds.

‘‘No not really, we still have a lot of batting to come,’’ he said.

‘‘If we bat our 75 overs next week, we get the runs. It’s just a matter of getting our heads down and doing the job.’’
