Saltworks plan is contrary to eco values

- PHIL FLAHERTY Phil Flaherty lives in Geelong West.

WITH the release of plans by the City of Greater Geelong to develop the land on which the disused saltworks are located, we should all take a deep breath and step back to look at the bigger picture of coastal land use in an urban setting (‘‘Grand salt site plan’’, GA, 17/9).

The Corio Bay foreshore is looking to become increasingly built up, if these plans and proposals for a conference centre adjacent to Eastern Park are realised.

The Point Henry Foreshore Management Plan commissioned by the City of Greater Geelong in 2006 states: ‘‘If for any reason Cheetham Salt suspends or reduces salt production, environmental requirements will be retained to sustain the ecological values associated with natural wetland areas prior to salt pro-

duction activities.

‘‘ The Moolap Saltworks are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and any future change would need to consider the cultural heritage values.’’

Salt production at the site, having started in 1894, ceased several years ago.

As advocated by Trevor Pescott, a wetlands park on the site would be a great asset.

Some of it is already Crown land and it would require minimal work, primarily consisting of removing huge piles of salt. There are heritage-listed bluestone walls and a few low buildings that could be retained as features in the park, illustrating its former use.

As previously suggested by myself and by a number of Advertiser readers, it seems a matter of urgency to establish a citizens’ committee to monitor and oversee present and future uses of the Corio Bay foreshore.
