IN his letter ‘‘Mayoral choice a challenge’’ ( GA, 29/8), Cr Stretch Kontelj states that the City of Greater Geelong has annual revenue of more than $260 million and assets of close to $2 billion. The successful candidate needs to have the skill to oversee an organisation of this magnitude.
This statement raises questions in relation to the role of the mayor when it comes to the decision-making by the council, voting at meetings, and administration by the council.
Since the mayor is elected by ratepayers, what will be the relationship between the councillors and the mayor?
The answer to the many questions that arise in this new venture must be made clear by the Government before the election. Adetailed print-out must be available so that the public are left in no doubt as to the precise power of Geelong’s No.1 public servant.
