Little Aths growing in leaps and bounds

- ALEX OATES

ONE of Australia’s biggest little athletics clubs is getting even bigger.

Geelong Little Athletics Centre is approaching record membership as it prepares to officially launch the 2012-13 season this weekend.

The centre is bolting towards 800 registrations after just two weeks of competition at the Landy Field Recreation Reserve.

‘ ‘ We have 720 registrations, but that number will go up as the season progresses,’’ president David Anthony said.

‘‘It will make us as the largest centre in Victoria, and if we get around the 800 mark, we’ll be the largest in Australia.’’

The centre, the first in the country when it was established in 1964, has already topped its ‘‘personal best’’ of 700 recorded for last season.

‘‘This year will be one of the biggest seasons the centre has seen now that we’re offering two extra age groups,’’ Anthony said.

‘‘Under-six is already up to 50 registrations in this its first year. It says a lot for our program and our coaches.’’

The centre will launch the season with an open day and march past on Saturday.

More than 700 children will march around the track before Opposition sports and recreation spokesman John Eren opens the season. A life membership and distinguished service award will also be presented.
