LIVING WITH THE AMISH
DOCUMENTARY Living With The Amish SBS ONE, 8.30pm
Yes, this is a reality show involving a group of British teenagers being sent to live with the Amish. But there’s a lot more to this show than just laughing at the spoilt teens as they try to adapt to the tried and true methods of a community who enjoy plain living and eschew modern technology (however, exceptions seem to be made for the washing machine). Although the results are predictable, this clash of the cultures still provides some revealing insights into teenagers and our modern world. In tonight’s third episode, the boys stay on a dairy farm that operates without hired help, so expect some unwelcome early starts and a few run-ins with animals which are hard to moo-ve.
DRAMA The Good Wife TEN, 8.30pm
Being in debt is never a nice situation, but it’s hard to feel too much compassion when it’s a law firm trying to avoid bankruptcy – let’s face it, they’re lawyers, they’ll soon find another well-paying job. For the show’s sake, Lockhart & Gardner will most likely survive their pecuniary difficulties, especially now Will (Josh Charles) has completed his six-month suspension. Meanwhile, Peter (Chris Noth) is continuing his campaign to be governor and he receives some welcome help from a wealthy businesswoman, played by Maura Tierney. He also gets some unexpected aid from the good wife herself, Alicia (Julianna Margulies).
MOVIE Event Horizon ONE, 9.30pm, AV15+ (1997)
In 2047, astronauts leave Earth to salvage an AWOL vessel that has floated in the cosmos without contact for several years. Upon arrival, the mission’s participants (led by Laurence Fishburne) encounter unexplained developments. Starting with gripping impact via some truly startling scares (not since Aliens did space looked so terrifying) and a score that the devil might consider for elevator music, Event
Horizon proceeds to plumb the dark recesses of scripting no-nos, resulting in sci-fi codswallop. Ultimately, Sam Neill is painful as the villain, and a botched resolution renders Paul Anderson’s horror-in-the-stars scare-fest only half interesting.
