I support aquatic centre, with provisos

-

I WRITE in relation to ‘‘Surf Coast aquatic centre an election issue’’ ( GA, October 15).

In that article, reference was made to three Winchelsea Ward candidates expressing support for the proposed aquatic centre development.

The obvious inference that could be drawn from that reference is that the other Winchelsea Ward candidates do not support the proposal.

As another Winchelsea Ward candidate, I wish to place the following on record.

On September 22 I had a phone conversation with Dick Danckert, who represented the Surf Coast Leisure Centre Action Group, where I outlined my position regarding this development.

I later confirmed my position by email to Mr Danckert on September 25.

I expressed in-principle support for an aquatic centre in the shire, as there are obvious social benefits in having a firstclass sport and recreation facility, as well as possible economic benefits that might flow through tourism and the like through the ability of the shire to host major swimming carnivals and events.

However, this support was tempered by my concern that such a development should not lead to a substantial increase in rates in the shire.

Rather, downward pressure needs to be maintained on rates.

I also believe this project is only viable if the correct management model can be put in place in order for the centre to be largely self-sufficient, without the need for the council to heavily subsidise the centre if it is running at a loss, a cost that would inevitably be passed on to ratepayers.

An appropriate site would also need to be located.

In short, there is much to do before this project can become a reality, and prospective councillors owe it to ratepayers to say they will be diligent in ensuring the project is done the right way, rather than committing blanket support for such a substantial development.

I am uncertain as to why I have not been quoted as a candidate who supports such a proposal, when I have outlined my support previously.

However, with ballot papers in the hands of voters, it is important, in my view, for the voters to be correctly informed about the candidates’ position on key issues.
