Show what you’re really made of

SHOWBAGS, rides and farm animals — yep, the Royal Geelong Show is here again.

Today the showgrounds will be the place to be for thousands of Geelong locals.

There is something reassuring and familiar about traditions such as the show that make living here just a little more sweet.

It’s the place where we went with our families as young children, where we went with our school friends in our teens and where we now take our own kids.

The Royal Geelong Show is a terrific community event, and in these days of electronic games, it’s great that we still have it.

Sure, you can’t fight dragons in a virtual world there or pretend you’re part of a secret military mission in a virtual war on terror like you can in your Xbox — but that’s OK. You can actually be out with real people, having simple, old-fashioned fun.

And that is something of which we all need a lot more.
