Geared up for glory
JAN Juc’s Craig Favaloro had the need for just one speed when he took on a 24– hour mountain bike race.
The 4 5 – y e a r – o l d placed third in his first overnight race, the Scott 24 Hour in Canberra last weekend.
He hadn’t ridden for that long before, and did it on a single gear, with no suspension.
‘‘ It makes you ride really smooth— it’s suddenly not about the bike but about the person on it,’’ Favaloro said.
‘‘I was lucky I had a good ride and followed by lines.
‘‘But I wouldn’t ride on single speed for 24 hours again.’’
F a v a l o r o was up against world champion riders and, in a field of more than 400, he wasn’t expecting to place.
‘‘For me, it was about finishing, it was that personal achievement.’’
Favaloro said he’d use his winnings to shout his ‘‘pit crew’’ a meal.
‘‘People say that riding is solo but it is anything but,’’ Favaloro said.
‘‘I credit the fact that I finished to my family and friends.’’
