Cracks trouble bridge

- SHANE FOWLES

CRACKS in a heritage-listed bluestone bridge over the Barwon River at Winchelsea will cause delays on the Princes Highway for up to two months.

Starting tomorrow, traffic will only be permitted on the northern bridge over the river while a temporary crossing, known as a Bailey bridge, is installed.

This will mean only one lane will be open in each direction, with reduced speed limits in place for up to eight weeks.

VicRoads said in a statement an inspection of the bluestone bridge revealed cracking of some of the stone blocks.

VicRoads will carry out further investigations to determine what remedial action will be required.

The agency has warned motorists to expect minor delays and to obey all roadwork signs.
