Former courts guard jailed

Drugs, gun found

- KAREN MATTHEWS

A FORMER Melbourne law courts security guard has been jailed for two months after being found with a loaded handgun, drugs, cash and weapons.

Vasko Zulumovski, 49, of Kingsley Drive, Corio, pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday to charges of possessing methamphetamine and cannabis and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

He also pleaded guilty to proceeds of crime, weapons and ammunition offences.

Prosecutor, Sergeant Glenn Abbott, said police executed a drugs search warrant on Zulumovski’s home on November 5, last year.

“Inside the entry, police found a walking cane with a knife attached,” he said.

“During an extensive search of the house and Zulumovski’s car, officers also found numerous knives, a clear vial of liquid and a quantity of white crystal substance, both believed to be methamphetamine.”

Sgt Abbott said police found a loaded handgun with five bullets in the chamber and the safety catch disengaged, which was concealed in a jacket pocket in the wardrobe in Zulumovski’s bedroom.

“Other items seized included a baton, $1250 cash, slingshots, ball bearings, ammunition, numerous bags of cannabis totalling 384 grams, three mobile phones and a camcorder,” he said.

The court heard Zulumovski had a prior conviction for similar offending in 2010 for which he received a suspended jail sentence.

Adrian Paull, appearing for Zulumovski, said that since his arrest, his client had completed the court credit bail program and was getting his life together.

Mr Paull said Zulumovski owned his own home and had not worked for a few years.

“He has been doing a few odd jobs and this behaviour was to supplement his income,” the lawyer said.

Mr Paull told the court Zulumovski, a former security guard, had once worked in Melbourne’s law courts escorting prisoners to and from court.

Magistrate John Lesser convicted Zulumovski on all counts and sentenced him to two months’ jail with a 12month Community Corrections Order to commence upon his release.

Mr Lesser also granted a Victoria Police application for Zulumovski to provide a sample of his DNA for police records.
