President Pat keeps on giving

- RYAN REYNOLDS

EVEN after the worst of rounds, Queens Park Golf Club president Pat Esler isn’t the type to shove her clubs in her bag and never return to the greens.

And that positive attitude has seen Esler, 73, get through 20 years of service at the club she “loves” and has resulted in the stalwart winning Golf Victoria’s volunteer of the year.

“I’ve always been pretty positive with my playing of golf. You can’t worry about the hole you played, it’s already finished,” the 20-handicapper said of her motto.

Esler was announced as the award winner for her golfing community service last week.

“It’s hard to tell (how many hours I’d spend doing things for the club). It depends, maybe 15 hours a week.

“I didn’t even know I was nominated for it. It was a complete shock and it’s something I’m very proud of. You never do this to get an award, you do it because you love it.”

Esler has held many positions during her time at Queens Park Golf Club including lady president, lady vicepresident, secretary, pennant captain and vice-captain.

“I’ve pretty much come right through the ranks for it,” she said. “I started there with my late husband Graeme. He was a very well-known golfer in Geelong and he was very committed to it as well.”

The Queens Park Golf Club life member reckons she has one year left as president before handing it on to another trusty pair of hands. Maybe.
