Saints divine in big win

ALL Saints Anglican moved into second spot on the Section 1 Tennis Geelong ladder with a crushing win over sixth-placed Bannockbur­n eight sets to one.

The Saints team of Ash Andrews, Jenelle Findlay, Carly McClelland, Matthew Findlay, Matthew Fisher and Daniel Thomas were in outstandin­g form.

Top side St Albans started well after the Christmas break with a solid 7-2 victory over Waurn Ponds.

The Saints line-up was Julie Golightly, Karen Filippou, Alessia Roso, Adam Lasky, Ry Davies, Phillip Nash and Alex Beardsell.

Grovedale (fifth) caused the upset of the day, getting home narrowly over third-placed Geelong Lawn to keep its final hopes alive.

Although it only won four sets, Dale won on games to win the match six points to five.

Abbie Walker won all her sets and lost only five games for the day.

Bianca and Zoe Duff collected two sets each and all three women’s doubles lost just three games in the process to ensure a Dale victory.

In the match of the day in Section 2, top side Ocean Grove just got home by five games, with sets even, over St Mary’s, which slipped from second to third.

Bottom side Jan Juc shocked fourth-placed Shell with a solid 4-2 victory. John Stephenson led the way for Jan Juc taking out all his sets in fine style and, with Peter Hubacek and Ross Johnston chipping in with two sets each, made sure of a Jan Juc victory.

Hamlyn Park moved back into second spot with a strong win over fifth-placed Clifton Springs.

In Section 3, Wandana Heights maintained second spot after demolishin­g Newcomb 5-1 and by 24 games to push Newcomb back into fourth position on the ladder.
