Courts decide on fines

- DANNY LANNEN

SHERIFF of Victoria Brendan Facey has emphasised that people will not be able to trade unpaid fines for community work during a day at SalvoConnect Belmont.

Mr Facey said the process was not available unless under court order.

SalvoConnect spokesman Damien Bernasconi said in a story in yesterday’s Geelong Advertiser that people would be able to negotiate trading unpaid fines for community work during the Free From Fines day.

Sheriff’s Office staff will be available during the special session at SalvoConnect on Wednesday to help people clarify their situations.

“Community work is not a sanction currently available for people to clear their fines unless ordered by the court,” Mr Facey said.

“Anyone who has concerns about outstanding fines can call 1300 SHERIFF or visit their local justice centre to discuss their options.”

The Free From Fines day, with free barbecue, face painting and showbags, will be held between 10am and 3pm on Wednesday.
