Cloud on Bailey for Cup spot

-

GEORGE Bailey is not guaranteed a place in Australia’s top World Cup XI despite being the man who could raise the trophy.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann said that despite Bailey’s status as World Cup vice-captain, his batting form would be the key variable in a selection mix becoming more intriguing each day.

The likely prospect of Clarke proving his fitness puts additional pressure on Bailey, who has failed to score above 25 in his past seven 50-over innings for his country.

“George needs to make runs like everyone else in the side,’’ Lehmann said.

“There is no doubt about that. The selectors will sit down and work out what the best side is when they are fit and available. We have shown before that runs are a good quota and wickets and performances. George, like everyone else, will have to play well to play in the final XI. There is no difference between the top player and the 15th player.”
