North Geelong finds late winner to down Geelong Rangers in Diversity Cup clash.
NORTH Geelong youngster Matt Humphries slammed home a match winning goal in the final 10 minutes to see his team grab a 3-2 win over Geelong Rangers.
The goal capped off a 20minute period of dominance which saw the Warriors, fielding a youth team, finish over the top of Rangers in their Di- versity Cup clash at Hume Reserve last night.
Stand-in coach Dave Anderson said he was proud his team was able to find a winner after surrendering a 2-1 lead.
“(The result) was pretty much justified. I thought the boys earned the points considering they are a young team getting ready and getting closer together for the start of the NPL season,” Anderson said.
“We tried to play an attacking style with a young side.
“We opened up in the final 15 to 20 minutes. Passing became more accurate . . . we dominated that second half pretty much.”
The loss leaves Rangers winless so far this pre-season, but coach Dave Perkin isn’t too worried.
“We had a lot of players missing, so a few young lads had a bit of a run. I thought they did quite well,” Perkin said.
“We are just lacking that bit of depth at the moment. We lost 3-0 to Corio last time and I thought the result flattered them. Then tonight it was pretty humid.”
The win keeps North Geelong well within striking distance of the top two and a spot in the grand final.
The Warriors play Geelong next Friday in a match likely to shape the Diversity Cup finals.
In the final Cup game of the night, Corio defeated Bell Park 3-1.
