Terrific Tigers trump Torquay

- DANIEL SHORT GCA2

THOMSON coach Grant Dew had one word to describe the side’s performance on Saturday afternoon — amazing.

The top-of-the-ladder Tigers made a strong statement against the second-placed Torquay claiming first points on day one, with an emphatic six-wicket win.

Dew rated it as the team’s best bowling display all season and was extremely pleased with the form the team will carry with it into the finals series.

“We just got off to a great start and kept going. We took the first five (wickets) pretty quickly,” Dew said.

“They had a really good partnership at six, then we came back after tea and had the chance to reassess at tea — we put the brakes on and then we were able to take some wickets quickly.”

“We just set out to bat, we had no targets in mind, it would be good to get through with some wickets in hand and all of a sudden we had some momentum going and it turned into an amazing win.

“To play in the lead into finals in a finals-like game hopefully holds us in good stead.”

“You don’t win finals and you don’t win big games without lots of contributors and the last couple of games we’ve been able to do that.”

The Tigers are in pole position for a big assault on the finals, with some fine form with both ball and bat.

But Dew said the side’s make-up was far from cemented with a number of capable players putting their hands up in the seconds.

“There’s four more weeks of cricket and anything can happen in those four weeks.”

“We’ve got some players playing in the seconds this week that have been playing firsts — they’ve got an opportunity to press their case in those games.”

“It keeps the pressure on (the first XI).”

“You want your best form players at any one time and sometimes that’ll change.”
