The spectacle of a contemporary Sherlock Holmes – complete with drug rehabilitation, a move to New York City and a female Dr Watson – may have run its course, but that doesn’t mean this series shows any signs of slowing down. In tonight’s season three premiere, Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) has been fired by the UK’s MI6 and is back on the streets of Manhattan with a new protege, Kitty Winter (Ophelia Lovibond). But it’s Joan (Lucy Liu) who must do the re-adjusting after she discovers Holmes has returned, and needs to ask him for help in investigating the murder of a key witness in the trial of a drug kingpin.
