Woo-hoo, Wuhan here they come
SACRED Heart College athletes have been invited to China as the School Sport Australia representatives in the International Sport Federation Athletics Championships in June.
After winning the 2014 Schools Knockout national final in the under-17 division with 257 points last December, the team has been invited to Wuhan, China.
Sacred Heart College director of sport Karen Cordy said she was proud of the hardworking students.
Cordy said the young women had trained hard and smart to defeat some of the best schools to win the gold.
“In all my years at Scared Heart they are one of the most standout, hard-working athletic teams,” she said.
Lily Bayes said the victory in South Australia had given the team great confidence.
“It’s a really great feeling to be the winners and beat them all in Adelaide,” Lily said.
“Now we have been invited to China for the world junior championships.”
All the girls said it would be a great experience to travel to Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in China.
Teammate Abbey Badrock, 15, said she was thrilled to have won a medal and be chosen for an international event.
“I’m very excited,” Abbey said. “It will be a big adventure.”
The team comprises Maddy Traynor, 17, Corrin Demeo, 16, Alex Mathisen, Caitlin Pickett, Abbey Badrock, Phoebe Mahon, Lily Bayes, Riley Timms, all 15, and 13-year-old Mia Gross.
The team said they appreciated the hard work and support Cordy had given to her athletes in preparing them to win the gold medal in the Knockout and the opportunity to represent Australia.
