Six of the best as Tim takes bay swim

AQUAMAN Tim Boness took line honours for the sixth time when he beat over 130 competitor­s in the 16th Moorpanyal 1000 open water swim on Corio Bay.

Boness, a past president of Lorne Surf Life Saving Club, has previously won in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2014.

Boness held back early as the leaders set a sizzling pace in Saturday’s race, only to surge to the lead and kick away after the turn for home to record 9.18, clear of Anthony Goss 9.24 and Craig Davies 9.29, with Keiron Paton 10.01, Ian Rae 10.03 and Murray Theyers 10.04.

Next in 10.14 was mermaid Isabelle Robinson, who took the honours of first woman across the line for the fifth time, ahead of Lyndal Dew 10.32, Fujita Sumire 11.22 and Nolene Byrne 12.13.

In the male age groupings, William Maghar recorded 14.18 in under 15, with Rohan Jobling in 13.42 leading in James Eddington 14.03 and Ned Elam 15.16 in under 18.

Males 40-50 were led in by Darren Reynolds 10.28, Lee Berger 10.32 and Brooke Angus 13.09. Males 50-60 honours went to Boness from Rae, Theyers and Rick Payne 10.29.

Males 60 plus were headed by Stephen Yorke in 10.54, followed by Ken Isaac 12.23 and Peter Byrnes 12.24.

Among women, under 15 Gigi Dunn swam 13.03 and in the under 18, Fujita Simire in 11.22 led Gracie McEwan 14.27 and Gill Savannah in 15.13.

The open section saw Robinson, Dew and Byrne first home from Narelle Scott 12.17 and Leesa Jenkins 12.35.

Natalie Hughes led the 40-49 division home in 12.27 just ahead of Kerryn Fort 12.30 with Tracy Shurey 15.24 next.

The 50-59 honours went to Sue Dineen 15.07 from Saranyu Pearson 15.29, while Cheryl Warrior 18.02 held off Lit Belcher 18.20.

The event’s annual duel between Geelong City councillor­s Stretch and Eddy Kontelj saw elder brother Stretch win by 40 seconds.
