Lyons’ share backed

Mayor Darryn Lyons claimed the most money in expenses for 2014-15 among Geelong councillors and also had the equal worst attendance record for the year, according to new data.

That’s actually pretty minimal. He’s online 24/7 and responds personally to Facebook, Twitter, etc. I expected the costs to be much higher. Small Cabcharge cost too. Melissa D’or Is that because he is out getting things done for Geelong rather than attending meetings to debate about what should be done? Jacque Holroyd If every elected official only spent $17,000 we’d be OK. That’s only three Ms Bishop helicopter flights! Juddy Sebastian Neame Function attendance? They are claiming a cost for attending a function? Michael Adams You’re trying to make a councillor look bad over $17k in a year? Come on that’s nothing compared with politicians. Tony Abbott can spend more than that on one trip. And maybe he isn’t at meetings because he is off trying to drum up more business and jobs for Geelong. Dale Hatton All councillors, politicians should have to publicly display what they have spent. After all, it’s not their money but ours. Maureen Orchard Geelong Addy loves giving him a kicking —$17k for what he’s doing? It’s nothing. Elwyn Davies Look up Jose Mujica. He was the president of Uruguay, the only decent politician that ever lived. Instead of claiming he donated 90 per cent of his salary to his people. Paul Raymond Sherriff The article in the Addy clearly states this amount is on top of his annual allowance of $187,414. Does this mean it’s $204,682 for the year? Kev Black Oh, give the guy a break. I think he’s doing an ace job! Sarah McMahon $17,000 for the entire year is really not very much at all. Nicholas Betson The best thing that happened to Geelong, having a gogetter and a person that walks the walk. Darryn is a breath of fresh air and an outside-thebox mayor. I’m sure if you stack the positive and negative on paper, you will see you’re just wasting your time, Geelong Advertiser, looking for headlines to create hype. Nathan Foord Like him or hate him he has done a lot of good for Geelong. Jenny Whineray Pathetic attempt at a story. Why would this be judged as news? It’s our muckraking media that deserves to be exposed to public scrutiny.

Can’t believe we pay for childcare! We are being taken for a ride. What’s wrong with paying for most of these things themselves? Always knew those in council aren’t there for the “greater good”. Anj Cowle You love to shoot the tall poppies down, very un-Australian. Love to see you work at what he does for his pay: bet you wouldn’t. Say something nice for a change. Des Fitzpatrick What’s $17,000 these days? Give the guy a break. Chris R Box I might not agree with everything he does, but he’s trying to do his best. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Can’t please everyone. Michaele Pappin How can you be at every meeting and briefing, as well as do all the rest of the work he has been doing? Love him or hate him (I’m more of the latter), he has put a lot of time in.
